Ex junction box and MV terminal, exploded view

What it is

A stainless steel junction box for hazardous areas, with a medium-voltage terminal bolted inside. In 28 seconds the box comes apart in order: hinge pins, captive lid screws, gland plate, earth stud, door, gasket and mounting plate. Then the terminal comes apart down to its studs and insulators, everything goes back together one part at a time, an X-ray pass shows the cables rising through the glands onto the studs, and the door closes.

It is a concept I built on my own to show how an exploded view explains a product that looks like a plain steel box from the outside. Sizes are approximate.

How it was made

  • ModelEvery moving part is its own object: the enclosure parts, the terminal's base, insulators, studs, barriers and nuts, plus the cables and lugs.
  • MotionTwo levels of explode, the box first and then the terminal, then a part-by-part reassembly so you see the order it goes together.
  • CheckedThe housing and terminal parts were checked frame by frame for overlap. None pass through each other. The cables and lugs were checked by eye.
  • Labels19 labels, each tied to its part's position in every frame.
  • Render840 frames in Blender EEVEE at 30 frames a second, 2.64 seconds a frame on average. About 37 minutes.
